Me thinks Goodell talks out of both sides of his mouth....Where's the anti-gambling stance the league supposedly has? This appointment flies in the face of all the so called moral clauses the NFL is supposed to have.

Depends on what was reported and what sort of investigation was done. Since it appears that there are far more than the number of officials actually needed to make up 16 crews it is possible Eastin never sees the field during the regular season

I wouldn't go that far. I do wonder where the NFL background check was on this. Did she pass the background check? Did the NFL, desiring positive replacement official PR with the hiring of a female official, decide ignore Eastin's recent association with the gambling community and hire her anyway?

The one thing to remember is that the gambling language is in the CBA, so in reality it is not longer something that the NFL needs to enforce. From a practical stand point it is a double standard but the language was written that they cannot gamble on sports period, and during the season not step foot in a gambling facility, and during the off season if they go to a track or casino, they must notify the league office within 24hours.
So...in reality, participating in the WSOP which takes place in May would not really violate the rules as long as it was reported to the league within 24 hours while they are a league official.
Now would this have eliminated her from full time consideration, I bet (ha good choice of words) yes. But this is not a normal situation for the league.
I doubt because someone played poker it makes them into a cheater as some suggest. People really need to stop the over the top hate, and just judge what happens on the field. People need to realize that crossing a picket line does not make someone a bad person, it is just something that maybe you would not do.

Eastin didn't do anything illegal and I do not call her honesty into question.
But Brent's comments are right on. If Eastin were a finalist and there were other equally qualified officials competing with her for a spot in the NFL, her WSOP foray would most likely eliminate her from consideration.
The NFL is so anti-gambling when it comes to its officials (rightly so) that this story just doesn't feel right.

If she walks on the field with sunglasses and a green visor then we've got a real issue.

Eastin would not even qualify as a finalist folks! She got "canned" from a DII Conference!

Eastin would not even qualify as a finalist folks! She got "canned" from a DII Conference! The MEAC is a Division 1 FCS conference. It's the same conference that Norfolk State resides in.

That's such a poetic touch seeing a replacement referee in uniform standing behind a bingo ball hopper.

Oh no MC,
I meant Norfolk State because they beat Missouri in basketball this year. The most recognized MEAC program is Florida A&M mainly because of their band and hazing.
