Apparently Rogers Redding, CFO National Coordinator, has notified the BCS College Officiating Coordinators that he has heard from Carl Johnson about new NFL hires for 2012. In an email to the coordinators, Johnson supposedly informed Redding that "20 or more" new hires could be made for this year, contingent upon the timeline of the settlement with the NFLRA. That would be a major issue to the college conferences, as schedules are in place. This doesn't seem "right" to me..........Any thoughts?

It could be believable as there are a number of senior officials (Phares, Wyant, Barnes, Reels, etc.) that could retire if a new deal is in place. Also with injuries what they have been maybe the league wants more swing officials

I had heard the NFL was considering adding to the size of the staff and that was possibly a hang-up in the negotiations. Maybe this is a sign they are talking more and the NFLRA agreed to this (??) Only speculation...
Could also be a way to have alternates at all regular season games. Although that doesn't make any sense since the league is balking at the increase pay to the current staff.

20+ retirees in one fell swoop is very drastic.
If I were to manage turnover, I'd go for 12 this year, and 12 next year, but this CBA is really messing with a lot of things.

During the Carl Johnson regime, there has technically been a 0% turnover rate on the field.

Likely would be zero turnover. 20+ officials would create a pool of officials to use with the current staff. Love the idea. You currently have more than two dozen guys that will retire. The question is not IF. It is WHEN. Common sense dictates that the retirement benefits are going to play a huge role in this as to the timing...ie Immediate, must work one year to receive them, etc. Or ...Lots of questions that we are not privvy too. Could there be a buy out on the table? Are there going to be new physical requirements? What there clearly is not is a succession plan in place to handle such a mass turnover if there is one. I am not sure the officiating profession of this size and skill level has ever had 25% of the staff become rookies. In any profession, in any walk of life, that is a lot. Now of those 20 new hires, there is one hell of a talent pool out there. Since there is no longer NFL Europe which was a much better training ground for the officials than it ended up being for the players, there is not a "literal" training ground for finalist and candidates. Take the 20 guys have them each work on the field 8-10 games, working as alternates, etc the remainder. Allowing veterans more games off and creating a solid transition for both the guys coming on the field and the guys going off the field. Could this be prep to going to 8 guys? could it be other things..? sure...but this would be my most logical guess.

They need to develop something to have college officials on the field during the preseason before they start their college season.

So the addition of 3 crews would account for the 20+ new hires that could be coming...........the timing would be chaotic, in my judgment. Adding 20 new officials during an NFL season (which it appears would be the timing of an agreemnt) doesn't allow much "training" for the new guys. It would also create a major disruption to the NCAA conferences if 20 or more of the top officials were suddenly gone!

Not if its in the Big East where they still cant figure out how to tell if a PAT is good or not.
