There are two points raised by Arnold that bother me
Pay - They are the lowest paid because their season is shorter and work the fewest number of games. All officials in all sports should theoretically be working hard during the week, watching game film, brushing up on rules, etc. Because NFL officials at most work once in an NFL week (except as a replacement which could be avoided in the future if you have an alternate per crew) they are able to hold other jobs. Some MLB umpires work 6-7 days per week. NHL and NBA officials spend off time travelling between cities
Protection - In the decade since the fiasco that caused the firing of Jim Duke, Tom Johnson, and temporarily Bill Spyksma I can count on one hand the number of officials fired or downgraded due to performance (Blum, White, Balliet, Powers, and Steve Wilson). How much better job security do they want? There are a number of officials who have not exactly been playoff regulars at a time when, with rookies, it is not unheard of to have to go to the 12th or 13th official at a position. What kind of job allows someone to consistently be in the bottom quarter and still keep their job?
Okay, enough rant for now
