What's the issue with adding three more crews? I am curious as to why this is such a sticking point...

Another issue with adding more crews means fewer games to work. When you are an official, you WANT to work. To go from a 20-game season (including preseason) to a 14 or 15 game season will not sit well with the officials.

This whole thing is childish.... officials make more than most people who are unemployed and the league makes more than most people ever will see and wont give any of it up.
at least this can never happen in golf...

The negotiations taking place are life-changing for the officials. Mike Carey owns his own business and is most-likely worth seven-figures. Asking him to divest of a business that he owns and started out of his own garage is asking quite a lot. Many of the other officials are either independently wealthy or making a VERY good living. I agree with the idea of grandfathering new hires in as full time and I believe within 10 years the entire roster will be full-time. Even if officials aren’t independently wealthy, they can supplement their off-field salary with their NFL officiating salary to make a nice living. Would the full-time salary of an NFL official make it affordable for the officials to quit their “day job?”
