Harry.....the vast majority of fans couldn't care less.....while there have been some infamous incidents as reported here, the vast majority of games have been played without apparent incident. I watched the Jets-Eagles game two nights ago and didn't notice the officials at all. Of course, Greg Buttle kept pointing out holds that were missed but then again you can do that with any game. Yes I know these are exhibition games and the intensity might not be as great as a regular season game, I get it. The people here many of whom are officials get it too. But I am afraid the officials will have to give a lot more than the league and while conventional thought is that if these grievous errors continue into the regular season it will force the NFL to move off its position. I think there's a lot of resentment out there and the exact opposite might occur where the league blames the intransigence of the officials' position for the errors and embarassment. The compromises will probab ly come more from the referee than it will from the league. At least, that's what I see happening but then again, what do I know?

cj, another thing to consider is that there has been a lot of swapping of positions/alternates that some of the bottom few may be "alternates" for the regular season is there is slightly more than 19 crews worth of officials working the preseason. If they cut it down to 17 crews every crew would have an alternate and there would be one "swing" official

According to what I just heard, negotiations between the officials and the league have broken down and no further meetings are scheduled. Armagendon has arrived!

CJ-from most of your quotes I assume it is safe to say that you have never officiated any sport.

The compromises will probab ly come more from the referee than it will from the league. At least, that's what I see happening but then again, what do I know? CJ-from most of your quotes I assume it is safe to say that you have never officiated any sport. And on what sir do yu base that wrong judgment? FYI I was an amateur baseball umpire many moons ago so your assumption is as wrong as it can be. Sir, are you an NFL official, an NCAA football official? Because I will put my knowledge of officiating in the sports I am interested in and consider major sports (baseball, football, soccer and ice hockey there is one glaring omission from that list and I never comment on that sport) but that is unimportant. I assume you are an official of some sort and do a creditable job every time you step out there but there is no compartison with what goes on with all the money involved inj a league like the NFL. But I respect your opinion and your right to have one and I just don't see what I said in the quote you boxed that has anything to do with what I've done in the past. I simply said, and I'll stick to it, that the vast majority of fans whose comments I've read on blogs just don't give a damn. Some might be influenced by what they've read but in the vast majority of games I've watched, the officials made little difference. But I also said that we might be comparing apples to oranges as a regular season game surely has much more intensity than an exhibition game. I didn't take a position on that so what prompted your silly conclusion about me? I've tried throughout to maitain a neutral opinion because I don't worship anybody whether it be the current officials or management. But as with everything, there are two sides to every story. And just to finish the thought, the majority of games will probably (note the word) be played this coming week without incident but I'm sure there will be some lolapoloozas that will lgith up this message board. Just what happens this week will pprobably determine the direction this thing will go.
