The replacement crew is working the opening night game. We will not be doing our official grading scale while the replacements are working. The formal grading scale will return when the regulars return. What do/did you think of the crew? Normally, this is my favorite post of the season as it means real NFL football featuring the best officials in the world. This post is a little empty this year.................

It was debatable if it was block in back or from side but not a clip

Yes, there is a foul called clipping. That wasn't it. Don't even think it was a foul.

Missed defensive holding in end zone

Question the false starts on the motion man......the clipping was a marginal block in the back, looked awfully close to a block in the shoulder from the side, seen this generally ignored. A lot of milling around on measurements. An excellent call on the horse collar.......where was the flag on the hold on the goal line? Some pretty good work on the spots by the wing men. Good thing we aren't grading these guys.

Missed defensive holding in end zone So? That call is missed all the time even with the regular guys. As I('ve said before, philosophically I don't have a problem when calls such as that are "missed". Rather not to make the call than to call a ticky tack (although I'm not saying that was ticky tack) call. Certainly not an egregeous non call, at least in my opinion. Half time commentary by Dungy agrees it was a hold but then said with 5 receivers out it was understandable the play was missed and the regular guys might well have missed it also. They got the clipping wrong, of course, it may have been a block in the back but then again many times we see marginal blocks in the back called by the regular guys. If the average fans had been on the moon during the pre-season and just came in and hadn't read any of the blogs and simply watched the half, he probably wouldn't have been outraged by the officiating. No worse than many a half I've watched by the regular guys.

DH was a no brainer if official is watching his key.Not egregeous, just a 4 pt swing! Perhaps a 10 pt difference or 14 would be signifigant. Clipping for an above the waist block in the side...I must say I've never seen the real refs pull that one. I'm gonna try to evaluate these games by a new "scab" standard & agree with CJ. Anything short of a JV High school performance in the NFL I'll consider acceptable.

119 should familiarize himself with reverse mechanics.

Really CJ..regulars miss that ALL the time. That's ridiculous. Rodney Harrison pointed out that even with 5 recievers, every one is covered individually by an official. I seriously doubt that anyone was covering Cruz...and if they were it would be impossible to miss! Just saw a block in the back call against Cruz, I think he breathed on the defender. I wonder if that would qualify as "ticky tack?!"

Ha Ha HA andrew...these guys don't have a clue about normal mechanics let alone reverse mechanics. I applaud your knowledgeable critical eye!

so far other than the missed holding call in the end zone, i think they are doing fine. a lot of penalties but dallas keeps committing them.

I'll leave it at what I said.....calls in the end zone are missed all the time. Perhaps not on every play. Yes they blew that one. I won't question that. And I know, Buzzuy. you want the regulars back at all costs. Management just doesn't see it that way. Do you mean to tell me you've never seen a hold like that missed? Please. Any fair minded person who doesn't have a vested interest would agree no they weren't as good as the regulars wuld have been. I certainy agree on that. Was is the worst officiated NFL ame I've or you've ever seen? I doubt if you can say that. They did call the penalties at the end of the game which were there and had to be called. Even Coughlin said it wasn't the worst performance he's ever seen (of course I'm sure the coaches have been muzzled). Was the result illegitemate because of the officials? In all fairness, I don't think you can say that. Tony Dungy did say that overall they had done a decent enough job although I didn't see his comments at the end of the game as I was watching President Clinton but their performance in the second half didn't seem too bad.
Finally I doubt extremely that their performance in this game will cause Park Avenue on Friday morning to call Scott Green to get his rear end to NY ASAP as they can't live with what went on during this game. It will take far worse for management to budge. If they got this performance for the rest of the season they wouldn't bat an eye lash to move off their position.
This is my opinion and you or anybody else is quite welcome to disagree. On a scale of 0 to 100 for this game I'd give them a grade of 60 which is a passing grade.
