He could have easily been a utilitarian documentary producer of a very unsophisticated sport. Instead, he elevated the sport into a work of art through unique cinematography, a bombastic soundtrack, and talented storytelling. His words for a Raiders yearbook film show the dedication to this ideal: The Autumn wind is a pirate Blustering in from sea With a rollicking song he sweeps along Swaggering boisterously. His face is weatherbeaten He wears a hooded sash With a silver hat about his head And a bristling black mustache He growls as he storms the country A villain big and bold And the trees all shake and quiver and quake As he robs them of their gold. The Autumn wind is a Raider Pillaging just for fun He'll knock you 'round and upside down And laugh when he's conquered and won.

What an amazing, unique and incomparable NFL song. I had forgotten that he had written it. Steve Sabol put his visionary stamp on the NFL and showed us the game at its very best. His works from the 70's to the 90's are essential to the history of the NFL.

And Sabol took a Philadelphia news anchor whose career was on a severe wane and made him THE voice of the NFL.
John Facenda has been gone almost 30 years and they still haven't replaced him.

Ed Sabol, Steve Sabol, and John Facenda three gentlemen who put NFL films on the map, and consistently produced a product worth watching. Who can forget Facenda's deep baritone voice which just rhythetically resonated as he spoke. There is none their equal and they WILL be missed.
