O.K. to rough up officials now? Perfectly fine....no penalty? Our society is getting sadder by the minute... In Detroit, this past week in a JR. HIGH basketball game, a referee called a T on a team, and THREE parents, or should I say ghetto thugs, jumped out of the stands and worked the referee over, during the game. The game was stopped police are looking for the low life who did it. No report on the extent of the referee's injuries....and we wonder why there is becoming a shortage of officials. I know this might be a stretch for this site, but it is totally reprehensible and disgusting. The official gets no respect, it has to start in the home, but when the parents are the perpertrators then what?

Tell me about it. When I refereed local sports in a good neighborhood nearly two decades ago (it was great money in Junior High/High School especially since the officiating coordinator would give me the highest paying assignments and many of the individual league coordinators liked the job I did so I would get any make-up game assuming I was free) I once had to eject a parent. A rainstorm had washed away a lot of the chalk sidelines on the soccer field and one team was giving me a lot of grief over my OOB calls/no-calls. Eventually after repeated warnings it crossed the line and I started handing out yellow cards. Everyone but one immediately shut up. The other parent I tossed and when he tried to come after me all of the other parents forced him back before he could lay a hand on me. My how times have changed
