I submit that hockey officials need player skills in order to be a good official.
You don't need to be a good batter, pitcher, or fielder to be a good umpire. You don't need to be a good blocker or tackler to be a good football official. You don't need to be a good dribbler or shooter to be a good basketball official. But, if you aren't an EXCELLENT skater, you cannot be a hockey official.

You also have to be really strong on your skates to break up altercations.........of course in my world of the future, you have a little basket on both sides of the ice suspended a fe feet above the ice which can motor up and down with the referees not on the ice leaving the linesmen to do their duties, conduct the face offs and break up the fights. (It's always fun watching those old time HNIC tapes somebody posted on You Tube of games from the late 50's and early 60's, there are several there now, watching some of the bench clearing brawls, the linsmen trying to break up one fight at a time and the referee standing around observing! Now those were the days my friends, we thought they'd never end!
