After the infamous Don Denkinger call at 1st base in Game 6 ignites a Royals rally to give them a 2-1 win over the Cardinals to force a Game 7, the Cardinals proceed to unravel in Game 7. With the score 10-0, Whitey Herzog brings in the very volatile and frustrated Joaquin Andujar for mop-up duty. The result is one of the more childish displays in World Series history as Denkinger runs both Herzog and Andujar on consecutive pitches:

I can understand the Cardinals' frustration, but that was ridiculous. Denkinger, though, gave as good as he got. Herzog: "If you hadn't missed that call ,we wouldn't be here right now. " Denkinger: "If you'd hit better than .122 we wouldn't be here either." This undoubtedly brightened Whitey's mood considerably. ;D

Andujar was a notorious hot-head. Denkinger was very patient with Andujar on the first pitch. If this was a Wednesday in August, Andujar would have been launched three seconds into his display.
The Cardinals, down 10-0, knew they had lost so they decided to abuse Denkinger.
LOVE those wide lapels on the umpires!
I think the jackets look classy - much better than the wind stoppers.

There was an episode of ESPN Classic's "Top Five Reasons You Can't Blame..." a few years ago devoted to Denkinger & the 1985 Series. In the show, Denkinger says he told Whitey to tell Andujar to stop carrying on or he'd run him, which is when Whitey went off and got tossed. Even then, Denkinger went out of his way to avoid trouble by letting Whitey talk to Andujar after he had been tossed. Also in the show, a St. Louis sportswriter said that Whitey was only looking for trouble by bringing in Andujar at 10-0.

Denkinger was actually a pretty good ump, but this was the rest of the crew:
AL: Denkinger, McKean, Schulock
NL: Billy Williams, Bob Engel, Jim Quick
Not exactly an All Star crew for the day
Both LCS that year had better crews
AL: Phillips, Ford , Evans, Hendry, Voltaggio, Cousins
NL: Stello, Froemming, McSherry, Crawford, Tata, Paul Runge
Of the above, maybe the only real pretender would be Voltaggio?

Of the LCS crews, all but two umpires look good to me. But, Ford never set the world on fire, IMO and Hendry had his moments.
Quick was good, Williams was ok, Engel was average, and I didn't see that much of McKean and Schulock in those days to form an educated opinion.
