Inadvertent. Whistle. The two most ghoulish words for any official. Well it happened to Gene Barth and crew in this 1980 duel between the Oilers and Broncos, wiping out a brilliant 77-yard punt return for a touchdown by the Oilers' Carl Roaches.

Ugh. Barth looked pretty upset having to announce that. It appears the deep wing on that side blew it. It is the current FJ position, then called BJ.

The Back Judge is J.W. Sanders. He officiated only a few years in the NFL.
The crew came to Sanders rescue a few times along the sideline, but he was kind of on an island for some of that abuse. A few of the Oilers could have drawn a USC flag for some of those histronics, but that would have poured gas on the fire. Probably best to play it prudent at that point. Plus, I didn't see any Oilers bump or touch the officials.
BTW, the Oilers score a TD on that possession to take a 20-9 lead.

I think that Sanders worked through the 1985 season.
