More fun with the old Instant Replay system, this time from the 1988 AFC Wild Card battle between the Oilers and Browns. Jerry Seeman and his all-star crew had their work cut out for them with numerous penalties and Instant Replays. None would be more controversial, however, than this Warren Moon backward pass which was quick whistled, denying the Browns possession and sending Bob Trumpy through the roof.
The covering official was LJ Ray Dodez. Doubtful the Browns or Mr. Trumpy gave him any Christmas presents when this game was over.
EDIT: Link fixed, apologies.

When I click the link I see a Lions - Bears game from 1985.

"The whistle can—not blow!" Well, except it did, Bob.
Fortunately, the Browns were able to convert a fumble recovery to wipe out any ill-effect of the IW.
Great finds lately, ak482!

This is just one of many coronaries that Trumpy had regarding the officials. Sounds like he almost blew out his headset.
Some other minutia from this game. Notice Seeman using a Fox 40 whistle. This is the only time he used a Fox 40. I guess he tried it and didn't like it because he was back to metal whistles after that.
The SJ is Larry Nemmers. You see a glimpse of him as Seeman comes back on the field.
Rex Stuart, U103, was a very under-rated umpire in the 80s, and 90s. He had to retire early due to injuries.
Also, under today's "continuing action" rule, Cleveland would have gotten the ball.

Holy cow, I'm still listening to this. Trumpy wouldn't shut up about it!

Thanks zebrablog . Hopefully the Youtube cops don't take these great games down. FredFan, about Rex Stuart: I was young when he was officiating but I swear I saw him in the middle of those umpire getting run over clips on football follies movies many a times, undoubtedly contributing to his early retirement. Also if you watched the rest of this game, there was a situation where the Browns got 3 onside kick attempts, which took about 15 minutes. Seeman was as stoic as they got on the field, but I have to believe he was overjoyed to run off the field that day. Oh and every classic game I watch with Trumpy seemingly has him going off on the officials.

Other officials on the game are HL Paul Weidner, BJ107 Jim Kearney, and FJ86 Bernie Kukar!

Here's the three onside kick situation at the end of the game. Seeman and crew really had to dig into the rule book to sort this on out.
I don't care how tough the ruling is and how emotional the game is. #81 does this in my HS game, he's got 15 (after the second onside kick).

Last one........two future white hat out there in Kukar and Nemmers. Seeman and Nemmers both went on to officiate Super Bowl 23 about a month later.

I thought the onside-kick-out-of-bounds rule was changed immediately after that, but apparently that change did not happen until 2003!
If I remember the 1988 rule correctly, if the kickers fouled on an onside kick (and it wasn't declined), they forfeited the ball on the next legal kick if they fouled again.
I actually have the 1988 official rule book at home; I should check for the exact wording.
