So it seems I'm bringing you folks a lot of instant replay videos, call it the broadcaster in me . Anyway, here is the first ever use of instant replay, from the 1986 opener between the Browns and Bears. Ben Dreith had the honors of making the first ruling, although neither he nor any of his crew members actually made an on-field ruling.

I'm thinking the walkie-talkies were dumped after the week 5 fiasco in Kansas City where a Raiders touchdown that was actually an incompletion was allowed to stand. In that case the replay official said "pass incomplete" but the official heard "pass IS complete" thus keeping the TD. Side note on this game, later on Merlin Olsen mentions that the NFL also changed its guidelines on where the chain gang was positioned, moving them back a couple of feet instead of right on the edge of the boundary.
