The last week of scabtastic NFL football in 1987 produces a bizarre ruling for Gene Barth and his crew to sort out. The ruling is holding on a loose ball during a blocked punt when the Saints player is called for holding the punter preventing him from recovering the ball.
I must admit I've never seen this called.

FJ Ed Merrifield Here's the gamebook, with the word STRIKE scrawled on top in red. www.nflgsis.com/1987/Reg/06/15193/Gamebook.pdfAlso in the gamebook, is this line which I never realized until today: QB 17 S Payton Yup, that's Sean Payton. I knew he was a quarterback in arena football, but he is also a tenured NFL player based on playing the minimum 3 games.

That's a great call. In Canada, it's called Loose Ball Interference. Application is 1D at the point of foul. In Canada, you have to play the ball, not the player trying for the ball. Also, I don't like the 5y penalty from the previous spot.
Seeing how we know Ed became a WH in the early 90s after just 2-3 years in the league, the HL85 must have retired soon after the 87 season.
