Walker was a very solid Referee for the Big 12. Between 2005-2009 he was the go to guy but then Scott Novak came along and he has shown to be one of the best Referee's in the country. Walker even worked the Orange Bowl as late as 2010 but he missed most of the season in 2011 with what I would assume was an injury. He returned last year but did not get the prime assignments he usually would and you could tell he did not move very well. Walker was also one of the heavier set Referees and sooner or later that was unfortunately going to be a factor seeing as how fast some of these College athletes are. Walker was not the most memorable Referee, he was about boring as you could get on the mic, but he had a great career in the MWC and then the Big 12 and will certainly be missed by Walt Anderson and co. But they will thrive with Novak, Mike Defee and Reggie Smith the cream of the crop.

Not to mention with the new system it seemed like Walker was getting more than his share of Southland games as Anderson tried to have Novak, Defee, and Smith work as many Big XII games as possible once conference play started and at 54 years old Walker just did not want to keep doing that versus traveling to places where he could just hop into his truck and go. If Walker would have had Iowa State, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Kansas, Kansas State, Texas, or TCU home games most of the time he may have lived with one or two Southland games or having to go to West Virginia once, but he probably saw what his assignments were going to be this year and decided it was time to hang it up
