So how did he go from being a top notch umpire to one of those who was forced out after the 2002 season? Sounds like some wild drop in such a short time?

In reading the article from back then, I think he and Bob McElwee both decided to retire and the other eight were terminated.

I think that the 8 officials we're fired after 2003, not 2002.

I know Jim Duke, Tom Johnson, David Warden, Bill Spyksma (he was later rehired and is now a Replay Official) and Dave Anderson were let go after the 2002 season. It also appears this was Tommy Moore and Lloyd McPeters' last seasons but I am not sure if they were fired as Moore is Morelli's Replay Official and McPeters I believe is a video operator.

Ron Spitler was also part of the 2002 purge.

34fan, you are correct, and I am wrong about the year of the firing (end of 2002 season).

Ron Spitler was also part of the 2002 purge. That's right Howard, his was a strange situation however as he ended up being brought back as a FJ (was originally a BJ) for 1 more season and worked the Pro Bowl in 2004 (2003 season) and then retired again.

Either he field a grievance and worked one more season, or there was a pre-season injury in 2003 and Spitler was the easiest to bring back.

FF7
IIRC Al Jury was injured- career ending preseason injury. and Spitler took his place. This was the preseason...Ron Blum was the CC.
I remember this Bob Wagner article from this site posted years ago....He retired along with Hantak and McElewee that year. The others were fired...Frantz was another I believe...
Do we have the records somewhere...we are bad on this site about archiving stuff like this so then we have to guess again years later..

Didn't HL Sanford Rivers was also fired, and then rehired? (He lasted until 2005).
I remember that Spyksma was a SJ from 1999-2002, then came back in 2004 as a LJ (his original position).

Sanford Rivers did not officiate in 2002 though not sure why. He came back in 2003 and then I think took a job with the Pennsylvania Gaming Commision???
Whats odd is that nearly every official purged after 2002 was either a playoff alternate or worked the pro bowl. I think only 1 of those purged wasn't in either of those categories. Why would they give 2 officials they wanted to dump the pro bowl and make another a playoff game alternate?

I was thinking about Dornan retiring in the preseason and Brown being out after week 1 due to an injury. In 2003 they rehired Spitler after Jury was hurt in week 1. I am curious why they didn't bring back a couple of officials that retired after last season (Baltz, D Carey, etc.) like they did 11 years ago?
