Usually they try out new refs in a game without the 8th official. I would guess Barry Anderson will get another try out since he was moved to U this year and he refed a preseason game last year.

Little delayed with the amount of extra information this week, and trying to squeeze in a mini-vacation. Interesting stuff going on this week, and hopefully this gives enough information for us to keep our eyes on.
To recap: 21 development officials 10 first-year officials 8 second umpires 5 center judges 4 tablet replay games 3 referee tryouts 1 first-year white hat

Mike Morton had a rough start as the Umpire in Bills-Browns tonight. He tried three times to sport the ball on the line where the opening kickoff ended. He first spotted it at the Bills' 20, then their 15, both times spotting it in the middle of the field, before putting it at the nearside hashmark. Needless to say, he got booed by the fans.

The U2 mechanic is no where near as good as U2 the band. Just too many in the backfield. If you want an 8th official, put the umpire back where he was at.
I am surprised the league put Alex Kemp as a tryout ref ahead of Scott Novak but I guess they think Kemp would be better than Novak even though Novak was the referee in an SEC Invitational Final (old BCS championship).
Was Bryan ever a ref in college???

Not sure if we will see the Umpire back at his traditional spot- too much liability and injuries- and possible shortened careers. Not the same game as it use to be...

Was Bryan ever a ref in college??? We discussed the same thing. In his last season in the Big 10, Bryan was still an umpire, so he either has not been a white hat or he did so at a lower level.

Carl Cheffers was not an FBS white hat so there is precedent for that, but I do think that you have a better shot at making a successful transition if you have worked the position at FBS level before entering the NFL

Caught a glimpse of Alex Kemp last night and thought he looked pretty good. Wouldn't surprise me if he was a referee in a year or two.

Nice call on a sf interception by ADP SJ Mearl Robinson. He could have ruled simultaneous catch with the Dallas receiver but it was a clear interception by San Francisco.
