How did the officiating crew do?

Not a comment on the game but the watch ESPN app is offering a feed simulating a college replay room with replay officials from ACC & SEC. Very fascinating.

Clemson got royally screwed on a late 1st half drive. They ran a play with 20 seconds or so to play and a time out. The play made a first down with 15 seconds left. The clock should've stopped with the first down and then started after the mark. The click was left running the whole time until Clemson coach called his last TO. Officials never reviewed clock situation and forced Clemson to use last TO with 9 seconds. With no TO left, Clemson was forced to kick FG which was missed.
I have a huge issue with this terrible example of officiating. How do they allow a team to get screwed by an official's mistake and then compound an easily correctable situation? Totally unacceptable fir officials and crew doing a National Championship game. Inexcusable.

An off ball official should glance at the clock on every play to make sure its properly stopped, started or running - especially on clock stopping situationos.

The C is showing me a lot of hustle.

I think the crew did stop the clock properly. The R just wound it very quickly as well, but they've been winding quickly all night. Don't see what the outcry is.

Regarding the Alabama surprise onside kick...
Sweeney was upset because he thought the ball didn't touch the ground. The kicker drove the ball into the ground right off the tee and it popped up in the air. That is legal. But I'm surprised they didn't review it.

I don't think the ball has to touch the ground in NCAA. I think as long as there's no receiver in position to catch the kick, that play is legal.

All in all, a good performance by the crew.
Good hustle by the C.
Maybe one clock issue, but this crew can be proud.

It did stop but was wound very quickly. I think you need to be a bit more deliberate with the clock at the end of each half. The teams rely on the clock stoppage on a made first down. Keep it stopped for more than a second.

What this exposed in my opinion is the fact that R's in different conferences wind the clock at different points. Watch how quickly ACC crews wind versus how SEC crews don't wind until the ball is put on the ground.

It definitely is inconsistent from conference to conference and I'll plead guilty to not being consistent throughout the game. If a team gets a 40-yard gain into field goal range for a first down with 5 seconds left in the game, you can bet I'm holding the wind and giving them a realistic opportunity to spike the ball.
Throughout the game I'm just signaling first down and winding. Nobody besides the officials is watching the clock then anyway.

Towards the end of the half/game you have to pump the brakes knowing the clock is a factor.

No foul so long as no R is in position to make the catch (i.e. field the ball). 'Bama caught Clemson napping.
