It's that time of year when MLB Umpires find out what crew they're on. Once crews are published, they'll be posted here.

That's a first in awhile, isn't it?

That's a first in awhile, isn't it? Yes, but you have to consider that the only somewhat injury prone Umpire with seniority is Dana DeMuth. Joe West and Gerry Davis have stayed relatively healthy. Ditto Gary Cederstrom. Also with CBA between umpires and MLB expiring this year I think a number of umpires like DeMuth, Hallion, Layne, and Gorman are waiting to see what additional benefits are negotiated in with the new one before they choose to retire. Had Kerwin Danley not had a resurgent year as an acting Crew Chief I think the league might have retired him gracefully as a weak year and he probably never gets to retire as a Crew Chief.

I like Davis, Cederstrom, Barrett, Nelson, and Holbrook crews. I don't understand why MLB keeps giving Jerry Meals, who is probably the worst Crew Chief with any tenure at the position (I give Emmel and Everitt breaks because making the transition is not easy and then they have had injuries), a weak crew. If they don't want a rover as his U2 then at least give him a better U3 like Adrian Johnson or Brian Knight.

I think Gorman, Davis, Nelson, Barrett and Wegner have very strong crews. This is also probably the best crew they have given Joe West in many years. Miller's crew looks pretty bad. Eddings and Conroy might have made the playoffs last season but both are very inconsistent.

I was disappointed to see Jim Wolf a U-3 again as I always thought of him as a good all-around umpire.

Please forgive my ignorance.
Do the U - 2,3, and 4 designations based on seniority or ability?
For eons it was based on seniority. Has that changed?

Generally seniority, but you will see some U2 with less seniority than a U3 because there are some U3's who will never be made Crew Chief (Bucknor, Foster, DiMuro, Fletcher). Not sure why with Randazzo unless he has personal reasons for not wanting to be a Crew Chief. From time to time you will see a U3 with less seniority than a U4, but that is just because in trying to balance the crews and honor Crew Chief preferences. I could see Wolf, Barksdale, and Fairchild among the next to be made U2 if a number of Crew Chiefs and U2's choose to retire after the next CBA is reached between umpires and MLB.
