The end of the North Carolina-Wake Forest game sparked some controversy tonight, as there appeared to be 1 second left on the clock when the UNC runner went out of bounds. It looks like the HL ruled his forward progress was stopped in bounds, so it didn’t matter that his foot touched the white with 00:01 showing.
Jeff Heaser—usually a solid ref, in my opinion—immediately left the field with his crew. Jeff did not explain the ruling to the crowd and it did not appear that anyone on the crew explained it to UNC coach Mack Brown.
Are officials trained to leave the field the moment the game is over, especially if the last sequence is not reviewable, or is it deemed acceptable for them to stay long enough to make a quick explanation to the coaches and fans?
To me, if Jeff had opened the mic to announce that forward progress was stopped in bounds with less than :02 to play and by rule the clock cannot stop in that circumstance, it might have averted some of the backlash. But I fear the optics of running off the field without saying what was going on will hang over the crew and the ACC even if they got it completely right according to the rule book.
So, what’s the best practice in a situation like that?

So, what’s the best practice in a situation like that? I agree. It was quite a bizarre ending. In my opinion, a quick explanation to the coach would have avoided a lot of the confusion. I do think that the crews are trained or at least advised not to hang around once the game is over.
