The league has a number of quality veterans, but there are others who are pretty clearly past their prime. Personally I think the NFL (and to some extent MLB) would be wise to follow the NHL method of retiring officials. That being said, it all depends on who you replace the departed officials with. I will say that, for the most part, the officials that have worked the biggest college games (NY6, BCS Playoffs, etc.) have had the easiest transition to the NFL. The officials whose top assignments have been 2 6-6 teams from lesser conferences have not fared as well. If that means certain relatives, ex-NFL players, or genders don’t make it then that’s too bad.
