Third Super Bowl for Payne and Cheek. Seconds for Vinovich, Johnson, Banks and Steed. First for Anderson.
10-years between assignment for Steed. 11 for Johnson, except he was off the field for three years as VP of Officiating.

Congratulations to the crew - IMO this is an ALL-STAR crew - Kent Payne has an amazing playoff record - a championship or Super Bowl assignment for 7 years in a row, and he has been assigned a CC or SB for 12 out of his 16 years.

Riveron has definitely favored having a Veteran crew for the Super Bowl which I can't complain about. It really shpuld be the top guy at each position with some caveats (no back to back Super Bowls, any tie in grade goes to the Official who has not yet worked a Super Bowl, Can't be passed up if you have the top grade more than one season).
With that in mind it seems as if Riveron is just going with the Official who had the best grade at each position who was eligible. Using the Blandino rules Cheek, Steed and Banks would not have been the Officials chosen to work the Super Bowl. Cheek and Banks weren't on the field for the Playoffs at all last season and have all worked at least one Super Bowl before and Steed worked only the Wild Card round so he was obviously not in the Top 5 of his position last year. It is easy to get mad at Riveron for a lot of things and much of the criticism is deserved, but I like giving the Super Bowl to the top guys at each position no matter how many times you have worked it in the past.

Fun fact, this now the 4th Super Bowl (2 on the field (2008, 2019) and 2 as an alternate (2016, 2018)) Banks has been a part of and he is still yet to work a CC. Mark Perlman also worked his second Super Bowl before ever working a CC but that is the only other Official that comes to mind in that category.
Long Super Bowl layoffs for Johnson (2007), Banks (2008) and Steed (2009). Very good to see them back in the mix.
Congratulations to Barry Anderson for his first Super Bowl. He has really found himself as an Umpire after being average at best as both a SJ and FJ. The window might be closing soon but I have a feeling he is back in the mix to be one of the next Referees.

About the only thing I would have done differently was give Allen Baynes the Super Bowl since he has never received an on-field assignment and I doubt Banks was #1 two years in a row since I don’t think he got an assignment last year. Otherwise no real objection even if in my viewing I had other officials higher (I thought Tom Stephan should have received his first Super Bowl)
