But as a black hat.
I"m trying to gauge the thoughts behind the desire of a mid-major white hat who goes to a Power 5 conference as a black hat. Is the allure of a Power 5 position as a black hat bigger than being a white hat in a mid-major? Are they NFL candidates who need to prove themselves as a F, B or H since they will go into the NFL at that position?
If you could help me with officials who in the past 5ish years have been a mid-major (MAC, CUSA, Sunbelt) white hat but gone to a Power 5 as a black hat and it appears that they won't get a white hat opportunity in the B1G, Big 12 or SEC?
Thinking about a FZ article, but it may not come about.
Thank you all.

A few other interesting situations were someone going from a Referee in a Group of 5 Conference to a different Position in another Group of 5 Conference. There are 3 instances of this that I can think of off the top of my head.
Charles Lewis- Sun Belt Referee to AAC CJ in 2018 Chris Bynum- C-USA Referee to MAC FJ in 2021, Now ACC SJ Billy Williams- C-USA Referee to MAC BJ in 2021, Now MAC Referee

This list is amazing, Russ. I was going to post Marvel July, but of course, you beat me to it!! I believe you can add Amanda Sauer-Cook, who went from MAC Referee to Big Ten CJ, though I can’t recall which year—2018?
What about former AAC Referees Anthony Calabrese and Tracy Jones? Did they move to black hat positions in the AAC, or did they move to other conferences? Todd LaPenta, another former AAC Referee, retired (if I’m not mistaken).
Whatever happened to C-USA Referee Steve LaMantia? Did he retire?

Calabrese is an interesting story. He started as an AAC CJ, then became an AAC referee from 2017-2020, then was back at CJ last season in the AAC and now is a CJ in the ACC. Tracy Jones was a long time Referee in the AAC and then got moved to LJ in 2019, not sure if he was demoted or moved on his own but he is still currently an AAC LJ. LaPenta and LaMantia are indeed retired.
