Heard that Reggie Smith has retired from the BIG 10 and accepted a TV analyst role. Any idea what network he is working for? Sad to see Reggie go. Always enjoyed watching him but he never seemed to catch on in the BIG 10. I am not sure he even got a bowl game last year.

Interesting. We'll work to confirm. Sorry to see him go.
Since 2015 he's been white hat for the Rose, Gator and Orange Bowls. Did Duke's Mayo Bowl after 2021. I don't think it was performance-related. I can only predict that it is a work-life balance choice.
But, we're looking for some information.

This opens the door for Francisco Villar, a PAC 12 R, who was hired this year to be a Big 10 C.

I am guessing either Banks, Knueppel or Villar will be the new Big Ten Referee.

But he never seemed to become a “star” ref in the Big Ten. Do you think Bill Carollo wanted to reward the guys who had been with the league longer, or was there an issue with Smith’s performance or “fit?” |

Do you think Bill Carollo wanted to reward the guys who had been with the league longer, or was there an issue with Smith’s performance or “fit?” In the Big 12, Smith worked at least one conference championship game (more--not sure?) and a Rose Bowl...I apologize if there are more accomplishments I am missing. It seemed like he never had a "big" game in his short time working in the Big 10. I, too, was wondering if there was some sort of an issue. |
