There was mutual dislike for each other. In his book, Luciano said that Weaver didn't like his style of calling a game and viewing it as a game instead of life and death. Luciano said of Weaver, the baseball stadium was his church and when he came to umpire a game, there was a problem with "bats in the belfry."
Luciano didn't like Weaver because he insulted his integrity and made it a point to mock and disrespect him. I don't know if they both thought it was water under the bridge by the time of this interview, or if they both held their noses and were professional about it.
While the Weaver/Luciano feud was well known, Weaver had just as bad or worse problems with umpires Bill Haller, Steve Palermo and Terry Cooney.

And here is a brief video of Luciano in his element. It's a shame he retired when he did. He had at least 15 more years left. There is well-documented stories about how his life came to an end and how chronic depression was the cause. He was a former college and pro football player. I wonder if he had CTE?
