I think Brad Allen has gone into CYA mode as his crew’s bacon has already been in the fire once this season. Here’s the thing, Decker, number 68, was there chatting with Brad Allen prior to number 70 arriving. What the heck did Brad think 68 was chatting with him about? Where to go to eat after the game? No, he was saying I’m reporting as eligible. And, I think, because 70 had reported as eligible several times before during this game, Allen confused the numbers. This confusion directly resulted in a lions loss. This is an administrative error that should have never happened. This is my take as well. The preponderance of the evidence seems to point at Allen messing up the player reporting as eligible. We will never know exactly what happened. Schefter is reporting that 345 Park is likely to downgrade the crew as a result of the play: bleacherreport.com/articles/10103081-schefter-brad-allens-referee-crew-expected-to-get-downgraded-for-2024-nfl-playoffsDidn’t referees used to announce players reporting eligible on the mic for all to hear? Seems like that may have cleared this up in real time if it is no longer the norm.

Good tripping flag by Roy Ellison.

Umpire Roy Ellison is helped up after this punt in Chicago. It appears he slipped on the wet field or maybe got bumped. Whatever put him on the ground, it is good to see him bounce back up.

Josh Allen runs for a minimal gain. As he's being tackled, he throws a backward pass to Khalil Shakir for a first down.
If line judge Robin DeLorenzo anticipated Allen being tackled she would have run the risk of blowing an inadvertent whistle. This is a great example of why officials should never anticipate the result of a play. Good work by DeLorenzo.

Justin Fields scrambles for a touchdown. Field judge Mearl Robinson is in good position to see Fields reach the ball over the pylon. It's a good touchdown.
Number 24 of the Falcons thinks he got held. He made a show out of it during the play. Replays show there was a bit of a jersey tug, but the defender didn't lose steps until he flailed.

I was wondering about this, too. I watch far more college football than NFL football, and I hear “Number so-and-so is reporting as eligible” all the time on Saturdays. Is that not a thing in the NFL? Another thing that confuses me: Doesn’t the Referee tell the defense when a lineman reports as eligible? So where is the element of subterfuge by the offense? How are they fooling anyone?

I thought there was no declaring oneself eligible in NCAA. If your are wearing 58, you are always ineligible. Anyway, I was also wondering if the R still announced that a player declared himself eligible. You would hear it in the background on TV but rarely was it broadcast like a penalty announcement was. For those in the know, does an announcement still take place? I guess the strategy by the Lions was, "70 declared eligible many times this game. Maybe they won't notice if they signal/announce a different number." It seems like they only fooled Allen, and, by extension, themselves.

An apparent fumble recovery by Seattle with 9:30 to go in 1Q was overturned upon replay review. Diontae Johnson (WR-PIT) made a reception along the sideline, and while he was turning upfield, he lost control of the ball. Mike Jackson (CB-SEA) grabbed the ball for an apparent fumble recovery.
Upon further review, replay correctly ruled that Johnson, during his bobbling of the ball, stepped out of bounds while contacting the football. By rule, any player touching the ball while a body part is touching out of bounds puts the ball out of bounds. Since Seattle had yet to recover the ball at that point, Pittsburgh retained possession after the overturn.

Buccaneers receiver Trey Palmer fumbled after catching a deep pass late in the fourth quarter. He tried to keep his feet but ended up going to the ground after establishing possession and lost control of the ball where it was recovered by Saints defender Isaac Yiadom. In this case the ground can cause the fumble since he was not contacted prior to going to the ground and losing the ball. streamable.com/500iqz

"Anyway, I was also wondering if the R still announced that a player declared himself eligible" it still happens, you hear it better in the stadium as the commentators aren't talking over the top of it.
