I guess Aaron Rodgers is preferring more of an NHL or NBA style. My problem with that is that it leads to situations where certain officials who are in the good graces of league brass get assigned year after year despite their performance during the regular season. The NHL in particular is especially egregious because outside of injury or retirement it is almost impossible to miss the playoffs once you get in. Look how many years straight Ghislain Hebert has missed the playoffs. If he is that low ranked every year how the hell does he still have a job? Taking him out, all of the Referees with no playoff assignments are those with the least seniority. That isn’t a meritocracy.
I do like that individual officials are selected based on their individual grades. I don’t want to give NFL brass leverage to force out officials by assigning them to weak crews so they never see extra pay for playoff assignments. It is like suggesting that teacher retention should be based solely on test results. A school district could force out a highly paid teacher by giving him or her a class of students that could never pass the test regardless of the quality of teaching.
If there is any change I would make it would be that officials from the same crew assigned to work in one of the first two rounds should be kept together as much as possible. I don’t understand why 3 people from a crew might have one game but then 2 others from the same crew are dispersed among other crews. Those 5 should really be kept together and mixed with officials from other crews that had fewer officials receiving assignments in the first two rounds

mike. The counter argument is the question as to who is doing the grading. I submit that the grading system is broken as evidenced by the fact that Allen and crew got an important game this week.

Wouldn't Allen's crew's assignment this week have been determined weeks ago? Sure, the NFL could always make a change in the event of unusual circumstances, but I don't think that's the case here.

This week's assignment would have been issued three weeks ago.

Assignments are made weeks in advance especially for non-Sunday afternoon games as officials need to make appropriate work accommodations.
