Shocked on Cheffers considering he’s worked 2 SB’s and a CC the last three seasons. A WC assignment is a bit of a drop.

Congrats to Rogers on his first Postseason White Hat Assignment. Cheffers and Torbert fall a bit from last year.
This means that for the first time since 2020 we have 2 new Referees in the Top 6 (Super Bowl, CC, Divisional). The last 2 years Blakeman, Hussey, Cheffers, Vinovich, Torbert and Hochuli has been the Top 6 and in 2020 the only difference was Martin rather than Hussey. So at least some of the stagnance at the Referee position is gone.

Wrolstad was my first R out when I made my prediction earlier so it does not surprise me that he got a Divisional. Bit surprised that Rogers got in as I have not been impressed with him as a R. Other than that no real surprises. I would not rule out Cheffers just getting a WC because he was not eligible to work the Super Bowl and the NFL did not want to be in a situation where they only had one Divisional R who could work it.

In 2018 we were introduced to 4 new referees - Clay Martin, Shawn Smith ,Alex Kemp and Shawn Hochuli - I think these 4 along with Adrian Hill are all very competent referees who can handle any game. I hope one or more of these get a Championship Game this year.

Just to elaborate on my last post rather than doing it as an edit. Cheffers it would not surprise me if he was Tier 1, but if at least 3 other R’s were Tier 1 it would not surprise me for the brass to say that Carl Cheffers has worked SB or CC 3 years in a row let’s give someone else a shot at CC. Why WC not Divisional, I believe NFL considers both the same in terms of assignments. It isn’t like 2&3 get CC with 1, 4, 5, and 6 get Divisional. There have been a number of notable procedural breakdowns this year from ordinarily high ranking officials. It wasn’t just Detroit, but I believe Vinovich had a clock gaffe earlier. By keeping more Divisonal spots open for officials eligible to work the Super Bowl they can pivot if needed without changing criteria where it would be noticeable. If they get away from pairing R with U or something like that it can be easily explained that the league was not noticing a difference so testing out going back to old way.

Congratulations to all selected and especially to Cruse, Heydt, Ramsey, Van Pham, Causey, Shears and Boger on their first Playoff Assignment in their first year eligible and Jimmy Russel on his first playoff assignment as well. Also happy for Mike Carr getting his second straight playoff assignment after having a really rough start to his career. That is why it is important to not give up on Officials so quickly. Some like Carr, Jabir Walker and Jimmy Buchannan are just late bloomers.
Many of us having been calling for this but it also looks like they are keeping regular season crew members together this round. In the past they would be scattered all over the place and it never really made sense as to why. This should cause smoother game flow.
Blakeman and Hussey being alternates this round also means they will not be working their second Super Bowl, but there is still a good chance they will be on the field one of the next 2 rounds.
Blakeman seems to be having a Corrente like run where he works a Super bowl very early in his Referee tenure and after that works the Playoffs basically every year including multiple CC's but can never get that second Super Bowl. That's not to say he won't still get one in the future but it feels like he just can't quite get there. Hussey on the other hand seems like Anderson or Morelli where he worked a Super Bowl at a different position but cannot get the Super Bowl as a White Hat despite getting many high profile Playoff Assignments.
Unless things change and the Super Bowl Referee and Umpire can get 3 Assignments, this happened in 2019 not any other year, then we have very much narrowed down those 2 Positions. Referee will likely be Vinovich, Smith or Hochuli and Umpire will be either Paganelli, Anderson or Killens

Carr it appears just needed a crew change. He was the top guy at his position in the B1G but struggled when put on crews without strong R’s. Now that he has been with a quality R his career has been revived.

Steelers-Bills game moved to 4:30 ET Monday. I'm guessing most of the scheduled officials are in Buffalo or arriving soon. They're going to be an extra night or two since it might not be possible to fly out of Buffalo after the game on Monday.
