Most officials are not well known in the public eye, unlike baseball umpires or NBA officials. There is only 1 official, past or present, who would ever get serious consideration for the hall of fame and that is Ed Hochuli. There are officials with better credentials than Hochuli, like Jerry Markbreit or Fred Silva or Ron Botchen, but the casual fan has never heard of any of them. And until Hochuli came into being a referee, officials were unknown, even the veterans.
Hochuli brought light to football officials with his physical appearance and some of his calls, good and bad, and that is why he is probably the only official I could ever see getting a real look at the HOF one day.

True, but to argue from my side, how come GMs and other "contributors" get recognition? Do non-Giant fans and casual observers really know what George Young did for the NYG franchise?
Oh, well. The die has been cast and if an official gets into the HOF, I fear that I will be an old man.....

Actually George Young is well known for his work across the league, not just with the Giants.
Like I said above, with all do respect to all officials, past and present, no one is getting in. Otherwise the names I mentioned above would have gotten in. Before Hochuli, Jerry Markbreit might have been the most well known among casual fans, and most casual fans wouldn't know who that person is.

Unfortunately, I really wonder if it will ever happen. There is no reason why they can't be included in the Hall of Fame. There should be 20 or 30 officials in there at this point. I mean Doug Harvey from MLB was inducted in Cooperstown, why couldn't have Red Cashion or Al Conway, or Jerry Bergman Sr. inducted in Canton, back in August?? I would love to hear the leagues pitful excuse for not having a wing in the Hall of Fame for these deserving men.

The reason there are no officials in the HOF? Everybody buys into the theory of 'The best officiated game is one where no one ever knew you were there' EVERY body - including officials from just about every sport has bought into this little bit of hogwash for seeming forever.
This is why there are no officials on the PFHOF...CFHOF....why there are only NINE umpires in Cooperstown, etc, etc
Only Bruce Froemming, bless him, has pointed what horsehockey that 'invisible official' theory really is. He has pointed out that it IS that official who makes those 'controversial' calls, or does something outstanding to get noticed who move up - and that applies to ALL sports at all levels - trust me.
I could point out at least six or seven baseball umps, for example who should be in the HOF - guys like Bill Haller....Shag Crawford....Jim Evans.....Harry Wendlestadt.....Froemming might make it in.....
The point is that historically, leagues and sports have ALWAYS treated their officials like dirt...even the good ones!

Actually, there is a small display in the Pro Football HOF about officials. There is a penalty flag of Red Cashion's, and one of the old horns used to signal penalties in the old days. There's also several old officiating uniforms, along with numerous other items. It really is pretty interesting.
I'll be there this Saturday, as the Ohio High School Athletic Association has a hospitality suite in the HOF for all of Ohio's high school officials during our state championships. Free entry to the HOF, along with free food all day, plus drawings for gear and such. It's a great time.

Wish I was a OHSAA official on that day! I just always assumed that the state football championships would be played at Ohio Stadium - they play them at the HOF?

FF7,
They play half in Canton and the other half in Massillon. If you watch the HOF game each year, there are 3 sets of markings on the field.

If I had a million dollars, I'd start a HOF/museum dedicated to officating in all sports and induct officials from all sports, pro and college each year. I'm in!!!!!!

MLB has inducted umpires to its HOF. But then again MLB umpires sole profession is as a full time MLB umpire.

You bring up an excellent point, one that I do not believe has been mentioned here before. What is the difference between a part-time and full-time official, especially when considering awarding a lifetime resume of work as HOF caliber work?
