I don't know what to make of this. Hochuli looked at the jumbotron to make a call? Ignore the animals in the comments section. bit.ly/h92OZe

Ed had more to say than usual on the mike, especially about the onside kick that was legally executed by the kicking team. More than once I have questioned how important the mike was, especially for control of a game. Is Ed exercising too much control? Was Jerry Seeman more visionary than we give him credit for in his laconic explanations, as well in his cutting back on flamboyant "selling" of calls? On a wider note, I have noticed that the Unnecessary roughness flags have dropped off, and that the quarterbacks are less protected than they had been.

We've all been wondering why Hochuli hasn't had very many prime time assignments this year, but after last night, I can see why. If the claims that the article makes are true, Ed and his crew should be eliminated from playoff contention, and face some other consequences as well.
I might make some people upset when I say this, but Ed is near the end of his career as an official. The inadvertent whistle in the Denver-San Diego game seemed to really send him into a tailspin, even though he got a playoff assignment that year. I used to really enjoy watching him work, but he's becoming far to authoritarian for my liking. Most of today's referees go about their business quietly, but Hochuli seems bound and determined to let everyone in the stadium and everyone that is watching on TV know that he is on the field.

Seeman wanted to turn NFL officials into Darrel Garretson NBA robots. I don't need an official jumping when he signals a TD, but, ugh..... If used properly, the microphone is a great tool for a referee. See Steratore, Gene.

There is NO evidence of NFL R-85 Ed Hochuli & crew looked at the video boards During the Packers VS Patriots game.
I feel this was just a rumor by Pro Football Talk & other Belicheat Patriot Fans. They are just upset that they almost got beat by a QB Packer 2nd Stringer & have to take it out on someone.
Let's move on.... as Mike Pereria would say!

I DVR'd the Game & watched in 2nd quarter this Foul.... & NBC of course replayed over and over the Helmet/Neck area hit & said it was a correct call, but they did not show the Officials @ all until R-85 Ed Hochuli was going to turn his Mic on & announce the Foul...

] If used properly, the microphone is a great tool for a referee. See Steratore, Gene. I wholly agree. Steratore is top 2 in my opinion. (this year at least. He's always been good, but he is top 2 this season I think, Leavy being the other) I thought Ed was a bit mic happy last night. Yeah, he's a lawyer, so he talks for a living, but there was no need to explain that GB successfully recovered a correct onside kick. Nor did he need to basically explain that he had to administer a penalty so the clock stopped. ed used to be great explaining calls, and I loved it, but now he is explaining far, far to much. I don't think he needs to go anywhere, he's still got a few good years left, but I think CJ needs to tell him to lay off the mic. We'll see how MNF goes next week.

Could this be some sort of power struggle between Hochuli and Carl Johnson?

A good point is made that one reporter/blogger claimed this and we have not seen any photographic evidence to back it up. Hochuli knows the game is on TV, the cameras are trained on him, an officials' observer is watching the crew, and the COMMISSIONER is at the game. Would he really stare up on the jumbotron? Waiting 20-30 seconds to throw a flag on a judgement call is a little too long, but that doesn't automatically mean Hochuli snuck a peek at the replay.
But if he did, I'm sure he will be downgraded.

I don't think he is trying to pick a fight with the new boss - the boss who holds total control over him getting a playoff game or, Super Bowl, or sitting at home in January. It's a fight he knows he can't win.

Well every game is on TV so we will wait and see what happens. BTW, I have heard a lot worse ridiculous things on this board than that.

Well, I thought that the call was very late, and as my brother was at the game and saw what went down, it did appear that the flag went out right after a reply of the hit on the big screens. Suspicious, but we will never know what happens as I am sure that this type of thing is not let out for public consumption.
Well, anyway, I thought they called some penalties that should not have been called, and missed some very blatant holding calls on both teams. It does seem like Ed inserts himself into the game more than mos with the use of the mic and what not. I think that he is one of the few Officials that even casual fans know, and I don't really think that is a good think. These guys should just be in the background...not out there trying to make a name for themselves.
