ok, so i know this is really old, and probably already got talked about on here, but i've only been on the forum like a month...
its when the defender just shoves triplette down. quite personally, i feel like, ya, the referee is apart of the field, but the way this guy does it is really unnecessary, with the arms extended and all. triplette is 60ish? and does not have any facemask to protect him...he easily couldve broken an arm bracing his fall, or even hurt his neck...

Yes, but the difference is that it occurred during an actual play, where there is a fumble return and the player is primarily concentrating on trying to get after the ball carrier. Unlike during a dead ball when there is no reason to shove another player or official, inadvertently or intentionally. Even Triplette said himself, "It's a loose ball, it's a fumble and it's just football" www.sportingnews.com/nfl/story/2008-12-14/ref-goes-face-first-turf-gets-bloody-nose

We did discuss this play on the board. We all cringed and admired Triplette for continuing in the game when he had obviously been hurt. While it was just a football play, some of of also were slightly critical of the player for not looking to see who he was steam rolling. But, in the end, it was just part of football. It is rare, though for a referee to get run over that hard.

Triplette has guts for staying in the game while his face is completely red with blood.
