bit.ly/gQ25nWWatching the Tim Millis play yesterday got me thinking about how difficult it would be to make such a call using 4- or 5-man mechanics. It probably wouldn't be feasible for the wings to run 30+ yards in such a short time to get into position, and as you can see in this play, the back judge isn't always in position to see the entire play. My suggestion would be to have the referee stand on the line of scrimmage (similar to the new field goal/extra point mechanic), have the wing stand 25+ yards deep on the sideline, and have the back judge stand on the opposite sideline. If the pass is thrown to one sideline, the official on the opposite side should crash and get into position to see the play, and the other official should stay put. This mechanic wouldn't be easy to execute, especially if the clock is running before the play. If the clock is stopped and the offense has time to huddle up, however, it can be executed if the crew is prepared. It's something that would have to be discussed in pregame so that everyone would be prepared should it happen. Hail Marys at the high school level are few and far between, but it's better to be prepared just in case. Thoughts?

Our crew plays it like this. The U and HL basically play the same way. LJ starts about 10 yards downfield AT THE SNAP so the HL rules on illegal formation. The R plays a little wider on the LJ side of the field. The BJ plays deeper (30+ yards or so) and starts in the sidezone on the HL side.
After that, do your best and pray!
