Good article. Shaw has really big shoes to fill with Dave Parry being gone...

Bobby Gaston spent 50 years in the SEC - around 20 as an official and the rest as SEC Supervisor of Officials. He was a crusty, political, unpleasant old coot (at least that's the impression he gave off in a referee magazine interview a few years ago), who forced his wings to shake hands with the tight end and WRs and have the referee go forward INTO the pocket when the QB dropped back for a pass. He had a method to his madness, but his mechanics were circa 1955 instead of 2000, and he REFUSED to acknowledge that football had changed from when he was on the field. Also, all officials just about had to have played SEC football in order to even have a chance to get into the league.
He loved football and officiating but his ideas and intransigence made SEC football officials the laughing stock of the nation in the 1990s.
Rogers Redding helped bring SEC officiating into modern times. Redding will be a good candidate to take over as national coordinator from Dave Parry. Steve Shaw will do well, too.

FYI for those who don't remember. This is what an SEC crew looked like all through the 80s and 90s. bit.ly/oBzVfA

Here's a look at that referee mechanic........ bit.ly/mPB0ToRogers Redding really brought SEC mechanics forward. I hope that Steve Shaw builds on that.
