Here is an extremely rare video of Super Bowl IV. This recording is from the Canadian broadcast (complete with commercials!). The Canadian network took the CBS feed. R11 Mcdonough U51 Palazzi HL34 Kessel LJ28 Schleibaum BJ25 Kelleher FJ55 Musser If you think Quirk and DeFelice show hustle, just watch Palazzi! Interesting historical time piece, too, as we see what's important in America, and how the Super Bowl is was just starting to evolve into the spectacle that it is today. The coin toss is around the 8:00 mark and the game starts at around the 10 minute mark. Enjoy! bit.ly/oy159C

Great find. It is amazing to see how differently things were done back then.

The mechanic that amazes me is the one where "the closer you are the better you are." The official pinched in and once the ball was dead, almost literally pounced on the ball. Now, of course, they want officials (especially the wings) to lay back and get a panoramic view of the action.
These officials were the best in the business, doing the game with the accepted and expected mechanics of the day, but we don't even officiate high school games like this anymore.

Don't forget that the abilities of the athletes often dictate our mechanics. I'm quite certain that the pro players from years gone by were excellent players, and at the top of their game, but I'd be hard pressed to believe that athletes from even 30 years ago could do the things that many athletes can do today.
