Can someone tell me how high school officials are supposed to keep track of downs? Called a game Friday night where on a series there was a run on 1st down, pass on 2nd down. On 3rd and 1 an incomplete pass and on 4th down there was a run for -2. Should have been a turnover but the officials awarded a "5th down". 5th down pass was incomplete and the game was a route but my question is what is a HSFB official supposed to do to keep track of downs?

Wrist band down indicators. Loop it over your fingers. Missing a down is inexcusable, no matter the level.

That's what I said on the air Friday night that officials use them. The crew did a good job until that incident and can't figure out how they missed a down.

There were no penalties in that series of downs? that's the only think I can think of, there was a penalty that you missed? If not that, then 5 guys (I'm assuming it was 5 man) all missed the same down. I have had situations where the Box was wrong, and we all got together on the field to make sure our wrist band indicators were correct and we fixed the box.
Are crews in your area mixed up or set? If it was a crew that was just thrown together, although still inexcusable, it might make the lack of communication more understandable. If these are guys who work together each week, there is NO WAY this should ever happen.

All of the officials had at least 15 years of experience. They are mixed and work different positions but there were no rookies out there. I dont remember the first 2 downs but it was 3rd and 1 and there was an incomplete pass. On 4th and 1, the snap was so slow the QB's knee touched the ground. They moved the ball back to where his knee touched the ground and gave them the "5th down".

Did the two benches seem confused, too? Sometimes what is business as usual can be easily misunderstood a few feet above field level. Perhaps there was a missing penalty in the series, especially since they are not announced in HS.
