It is Mark Carlson, not Dale Scott working the Plate in Game 1 in texas. This is probably because Scott worked 13 innings behind the plate in Atlanta on Wednesday. He's at 2nd base today. Don't be surprised if Joe West doesn't work home plate tomorrow either. He worked 12 innings behind the plate on Wednesday in Tampa.

russ...I'm not sure how mlb decides to do it but in the 7 game series the cc works the plate in game 1 so in the rotation coming around he also gets the plate in case there's a game 7....
I'm not sure but I think in the 5 game series (we'll see later), the cc starts in left field? so that as he rotates around he does the plate in game 5? Maybe that's the way it works.

Tony Randazzo is working the plate in New York tonight and Gerry Davis is starting at 2nd. The CC used to ALWAYS start at home, regardless of whiter it's a 5-game or 7-game series.
MLB must think that game 3 is the most important game of the series, so they must want the CC behind the plate for it.

For a seven game series I think the plate umpire for game six is most crucial. It's always a potential clincher and Dave Phillips always said game six is the most crucial, because umpires HAVE to get to game seven cleanly.

That's why they always have the other crew chief work game 6. Its a big game and they trust him enough to handle the duty. Same with game 5 in the WC round.

In a five game series, game 3 is critical. The loser is either eliminated or on the brink of elimination. So it makes sense for the crew chief to work the plate in game 3 of a best of five.

...of course if you only had 4 umpires working the playoff games, then the crew chief could work game 1 and game 5....I know, shut up already about that but sometimes my warped ideas are correct and make sense.

the 4 man crew doesn't work as well for the 7 game series unless you have a second regular season crew chief to do either games 1 & 5 or games 3 & 7

mike....in a 7 game series, with a 4 man crew, 3 of the 4 guys work 2 games at the plate each...assuming you buy into this bs that this is a meritocracy (and I don't, politics rear their ugly head in any endevor like this, just look how on this board everybody sits around and says well Winter is having a great season so he should get the Super Bowl and then he doen't even make the playoffs, happens every season. No matter what you or I think and they say publically, they have their reasons and a lot of it is politics) all your umpires in the league finals and the mlb finals are top notch umpires so it shouldn't matter namely you rank your umpires from 1 to whatever it is (68?)...the top 4 get the World Series and one league semi final assignment, the next 8 get the league finals and then the next 12 work with the top 4 on the league semi finals....as it is we go 36 deep in the depth chart which is more than half so really when you look closely, what kind of a meritocracy is it really (you can also use the next 12 as the alternates knowing full well chances are they never get in!).
