Don't know about world series but I am happy with most of these selections. JayJay you should be very happy, the crew for the Tigers-Yankees is Outstanding! The only crew I am really skeptical about is Cards-Phillies. Layne had a down year and Meals and Hernandez have a bad reputation, but honestly I think they'll do fine. Congrats to James Hoye and Chad Fairchild on their first postseason assignments. Hoye really deserves and while I'm not so sure about Fairchild, again he doesn't worry me that much. I am also really glad to see Mark Carlson and Marvin Hudson back in the playoffs. Ever since Hudson's terrible call in DC on Jose Reyes back in April, he has really stepped forward and made a name for himself. I am really excited for the playoffs to start. Yesterday was the most epic day of baseball I have ever watched.

As long as the guys keep the game ahead of themselves there should not be a problem. I do think several of the "weaker" guys are ther because of the collective bargaining agreement, and we can't do anything about that. Ya Russ: the crew in the Yankee-Tiger game looks to be the most solid of the crews. But we'll see when the first pitch is thrown. I hope we can get through the entire playoff scene without any major controversies, and the guys remember the fans are there for the game, not to watch the umpires "strut their stuff".

I'm sure our predictions of who will be dong the WS based on our own perceived definitions of quality will prove to be as accurate as our predictions for the Super Bowl. (Like the "rarings" really exist, we all know what a laugh this is in the NFL).
Secondly, it's hardly an honor end up umping in the mlb playoffs. Even granted that the six World Series umpires come from the league semi finals series, that means you are going 36 umpires into your depth chart of what, 60 full time umpires. That doesn't erxactly mean if you're the 37th umpire and make the grade for the league semi finals, that you're necessarily all that good. Notable by their absence here are umpires such as Bob Davidson and Phil Cuzzi, two umpires that most here consider absolutely incompetent. Betcha they both make the league finals.
Of course, I know I';m repetitiive yet I'll bring it up again. In officiating, more is not necessarily better. Baseball is the only sport that changes its umpiring mechanics for its playoffs by going with 6 man crews which has umpires looking at the game from completely different angles than what they are used to. The games should be officiating the same way they are during the regular season. Four umpires are more than enough to properly adjudicate a baseball game. You want to appoint six umpires for each series, fine. But two should be designated as alternates; dress for the games and be ready to step in if somebody gets ill or hurt. Or maybe, rotate six with the guy working first base sitting out the day before he works the plate and the previous day's plate guy sitting out the next day. Too many times we have seen not just bad calls, but horrible calls because the umpires are making a call from a completely different location (see Garcia, R to see this in operation).
Finally, bear in mind that in the league semi finals they cross over after the first two games so the guys working the Yankee series probbly will finish off doing the Tampa Bay games to finish.

CJ, I'm gonna have to disagree. First off there are 68 umps and most of them do a really good job. I don't think there is any chance that Cuzzi and Davidson work the playoffs at all. There are only 12 spots left for the playoffs and at least 17 whom I think have a great chance of working the LCS and that is not taking into account possible surprises ie. Bucknor or Vanover

I agree with CJ's point about adding 2 extra umpires for postseason games. You don't see the NFL add 2 or 3 extra officials for postseason games, nor do you see the NBA add an extra zebra or two in the playoffs.
The mechanics are completely different, and after working 140+ games with 4-man mechanics, it has to be hard for these guys to adjust.

It's hard to argue with most of the umpire who were assigned to the LDS. I'm not sure if West, Layne and Meals deserved to make it, but it is what it is.

Meals had a bad call earlier in the year. I had him as a next in-line Crew Chief along with Barrett, Nelson, Everitt. A lot of good umpires will not be crew chiefs due to influx of 1999.
The best should make Playoffs...The first 24 and par down from there like NBA. If you do not make first round, you do not work post season. This allows the perceived opportunity the best move on.
I am not one in position to rate umpires, however, I am not a fan of Hernadez and believe Randazzo has progressed greatly the past few seasons along with Carlson. Hope to see Tom Hallion before all said and done.
Does anyone know if D. Cousins is retiring?
Regardless of our personal feelings, best of luck to all these gentlemen selected.

I think the next two crew chiefs are Wally Bell and Jeff Nelson. I am not so sure they are ready to hire a class of 1999 guy. If they were I would say Brian O'Nora, Ted Barrett, Fieldin Culbreth and Mike Everitt would get heavy consideration. As far as reitrements, I'm gonna say the next guys are Tim McClelland, Derryl Cousins and Jim Joyce. It is very apparent that McClelland and Cousins have lost a step or two. They are not anywhere near as solid balls and strikes wise as they once were and both guys missed multiple safe-out calls that were right infront of them. I do not think we see either guy in the LCS round. They were fantastic umpires and I think at least McClelland will eventually make the hall of fameI am afraid that maybe their time has come. As far as Joyce, he has missed a lot of the last two seasons and when he was healthy this season he just did not seem himself at all. There was not the same smile he always used to have and he had a much shorter fuse during arguments. Something was not right with him at all. But who knows, I could dead wrong.

LCS Predictions:
AL
Tim Welke Ed Rapuano Laz Diaz Fieldin Culbreth Larry Vanover Jim Wolf
NL:
Dana Demuth Tom Hallion Jeff Nelson Wally Bell Mike Everitt Brian Runge
Other Possibilities: CB Bucknor (I'm dead serious, he had no ejections this year and has made great strides) Mike Winters (usually solid, I ha to pick between him and Rapuano and my gut tells me Rapuano) Tim Timmons (Did well with the Zambrano ejection) Jim Reynolds (Worked the ALCS last year)
