Paul Nauert had to leave the Reds-Cubs game due to apparent heat exhaustion. The Reds announcers seemed to think Paul tried to hang in there a bit too long as he had been visibly struggling for a while. Doug Eddings replaced Nauert behind the plate. Here is the video of Nauert leaving the game. mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=17772123The heat is nothing to mess with. All sports officials - HYDRATE! This starts 24-hours before your game. Drink non-caffeinated fluids, even if you aren't thirsty. Your body will thank you when you sweat off a dozen pounds working your game.

Earlier in this thread or one of the other threads, I made what might be a common sense suggestion. With all the equipment, as light weight as it is, and the balls being thrown harder and harder, perhaps it's time to consider that if the temperature is over 40 degrees celsius (the only true temperature scale of course), the plate umpire switches mid way through the game and if the game runs into extra innings, every 5 innings after that. Also while I'm not a proponent of more than 4 guys on the field at any one time, perhaps it makes sense to appoint 5 or 6 umpires to a crew and keep 2 spares and rotate 6 with each guy sitting out the game before and the game after a plate assignment.
After all, it's only money.

cj:
Not a bad idea, the players get a bit of a blow, the umps should get it too. I remember working a state softball final in the heat and humidity not quite as brutal as it's been this year, but they brought out water and ice, and a towel every half inning. Does anyone watch over the umps at all in this heat? Maybe someone has seen what they do. What do they do?

Nauert apparently was tended to several times before eventually having to leave in the eighth inning. He was definitely given water several times. I'm not sure what else he was given.

Before returning for this series, Nauert had not worked a game since June 12th. I wonder if that had anything to do with why he left yesterday? Just a thought.

Shane Victorino is the only one who gets suspended for the Phillies-Giants brawl, and he gets a menial 3 games. es.pn/qbyKeUI don't know why more players weren't suspended or fined.

Hunter Wendlestedt getting an earful from the Fred boys of the Braves. Manager Freddi Gonzalez and Freddie Freeman both tossed for arguing balls and strikes. Hunter not only hearing plenty at the ballpark, he is getting the business on MLB Network. Larry Bowa & Tom Verducci none too thrilled with the tosses.
