Dennis Lipski overcome by heat in Columbus and has left game. Back Judge is now referee. Surprised with all the heat all summer that he only lasted a quarter and a half. Would have expected everyone adjusted to the heat.

Lipski is a good referee. I hope he's ok.

I just flipped the game on and was wondering why the back judge was working the referee position. Thanks for the info.
Like players, officials have to start preparing themselves for hot games at least 2 or 3 days before the game. Drink lots of water and eat an apple or orange everyday so you'll be prepared to stand in the heat for 3+ hours.
Also, anyone who's ever been on one of the newer artificial surfaces that are made with rubber pellets knows how hot those fields are. It can be plum miserable, even if the temperature is in the 80's.

I've been on sidelines on those fields this type of year in long sleeves and long pants. You have to hydrate days in advance and also you have to carry at least a dozen bottles of water on you. You often times will have to pee a lot but it's better to have to do that than get dehydrated.

Im curious to know if the new pants the refs have in college are cooler this year then normal or warmer. The knickers fit snug to your body, the pants would, in theory, be more breathable. But black pants in the beating down sun....it might be a wash in brutal heat.

I just dont get why he was out so quick. I mean it has been hot in the midwest and the whole country the whole summer and I would have to figure most officials do a lot of conditioning to prepare for this weather.
