Sorry not to see Bob Delaney end a remarkable career with a Finals appearance....Congrats and Best Wishes....
NBA continues to transition the Young Guard....Malloy, Davis, Foster, McCutcheon.
Is this also the last season for Bennett Salvatore?

Are games 5-7 a repeat of 1-3?
From what I can tell, Game 3 crew chief Dan Crawford missed a huge call in his game.

They have not been in past years. Joey Crawford got both Games 6 and 7 in last year's Finals. Last year's Game 7 had the two Crawfords and Scott Foster.

Thanks for the correction, billump. I knew Joey had got two of the last three - my middle-aged memory said it was Game 6.

2011 FINALS
1 - 29 JAVIE, 24 CALLAHAN, 55 KENNEDY 2 - 17 CRAWFORD, 73 MALLOY, 41 MAUER 3 - 43 CRAWFORD, 48 FOSTER, 9 STAFFORD 4 - 13 MCCUTCHEN, 34 DAVIS, 57 WILLARD 5 - 6 - 7 -
Looking at the 2010 finals, the 3 Game 7 officials are all CCs from earlier games. Game 6 has CC and the next highest ranked officials. I'll surmise that the CC which worked Gm 7 didn't do anything to screw up their chances in order to get Gm 7 rather than Gm 6, or nothing at all.
Also looking at 2010, McCutchen seems to be "the next guy" after Foster, which I think is right on the money - although Foster hasn't had a CC yet this year. They are both great officials.
With Javie back in the mix, and if the series goes to 7 games, which we knows from Donaghy that the NBE does in fact want, then I predict:
Gm 7 will be: 17 CRAWFORD (CC), 29 JAVIE, 13 MCCUTCHEN. I think 43 CRAWFORD is out for the missed over and back call.
Gm 6: 43 CRAWFORD, 48 FOSTER, 41 MAUER.
Gm 5: 29 JAVIE, 24 CALLAHAN, 34 DAVIS.

I would think if there were 7 games the Crew Chiefs for 6 and 7 will be Javie and Crawford as there is good reason to believe they are ranked 1 and 2.
I would be confident to say Steve Javie is the number 1 Official in the NBA and has been for some time. I believe Joey Crawford took that spot upon retirement of Jake O'Donnell and Javie and Dan Crawford both had hit number 1 with Javie taking control of this ranking.

I did some research on series that have gone 7 games, and there isn't much rhyme or reason to how the games are assigned.
In 2005 (DET-SA), all 3 game 7 officials had only worked 1 game prior to the game 7 assignment. The same was true in 1994 (NYK-HOU). In both 2005 and 1994, the game 7 crew chief was also the crew chief in game 4. Joe Crawford's assignment to 3 finals games last year seems like a rarity.
Here's my predictions for the last 3 games:
Game 5: J. Crawford, Callahan, Mauer Game 6: Javie, Stafford, Kennedy/Willard Game 7: D. Crawford, McCutchen, Foster
I don't see either of the "rookies" (Malloy & Davis) getting multiple assignments, which leaves 10 guys for 3 spots. Either Kennedy or Willard will probably be the odd man out.

The NBA in the 1960s was simple: If the finals went 7 games, Mendy Rudolph and Earl Strom worked the game. In the 1962(?), the teams could recommend referees for the finals. Back then teams had more power and could make or break an officials' career (The St. Louis Hawks got Sid Borgia fired from the NBA). Anyway, the two teams could only agree on Rudolph and Strom, so for the first and only time, those two worked the entire Championship Series.

Excellent find! I had been trying to find this for quite some time. Eric Strom had posted some memoirs on his father on a website that was later shut down.
