Tom Hallion is from the old school, a protege of Jerry Crawford and a very good umpire with a low threshold when in comes to arguments. IMO one of the best..... Agreed. He's not confrontational but he doesn't put up with any nonsense from these crybabies. His demeanor is one that young umpires should emulate. Best called 3rd strike mechanic in the league too, IMO.

After Froemming retired, Hallion took over the best Strike 3 mechanic. Froemming used three out of four limbs to call strike three!

Of all the umpires who returned from the mass resignation fiasco, I believe Tom Hallion has done the best job. I also enjoy the strike three mechanic. i just hope he has a good chiropractor.

Joe West, for all the controversy he generates, has also done a very good job. Hallion has done a great job too.
I wish Jim Evans, Drew Coble, Frank Pulli, and Terry Tata could have joined Hallion et al.

Frank Pulli was in his mid to late 60's and Terry Tata was approaching 60, I believe Drew Coble never resigned but was terminated as part of mass resignation and never figured out why Evans resignation was accepted as he was in his early 50's and long time crew chief...

As part of a final settlement, I believe mlb agreed to take back every umpire who was under some specified age which iwould account for the fact, for example, that Bob Davidson who deserved to be permanently retired, was brought back along with Hallion. Therefore, I believe Jim Evans, I could be wrong, was older than in his early 50's at the time of the resignation otherwise I am sure he would have been brought back probably earlier (I don't think Evans was in all that disfavor as was true for guys like Ken Kaiser who was never brought back perhaps for health reasons perhaps for age, at least as I remember, that was what happened.

On further review, Evans was born in November 1946 and indeed would have been in his early 50's at the time of the mass resignation. Perhaps, he decided to chuck it and concentrate on his umpiring school; I just never got the feeling that he was in terrible disfavor. I know there were arbitration hearing held a few years later (before the final settlement I spoke about above) and the arbitrator went down each of the umpires they didn't bring back one by one. I think that's when guys like Gary Darling and Joe West got their jobs back while guys like Kaiser, Gregg, Davidson, Hallion for varous reasons were arbitrated to have been incompetent and fired for just cause. Later on, as noted, another settlement brought the last few umpires back who were still the age to return to the field hence we were subjected to Davidson and to a lesser degree Hallion.

Hallion, Davidson, and Hickox were never brought back under arbitration. They had to work back through the minor leagues. Once they proved they "belonged" they were swing umpires. In the 2006ish CBA it was agreed that those three would be three out of the next five hires. Those three didn't get back to the majors until 2006 and weren't hired on full time for a few years after that.

The umpires that they didn't hire back: some were given back pay and allowed to retire. Eventually all of them received the pension and retirement benefits that was due them.

B.J. Upton needs to sit for a game or two. That kind of behavior is ridiculous. If he were to do that to someone in a bar or on the street, someone would clean his clock. BJ is an uppity, undisciplined sack of shi*.

Jim Joyce banned from Arizona Diamondbacks' games. It's not for missing the Gallaraga call (he's on the Diamondbacks this year). bit.ly/mocFRlI think this is a good call.

Angel Hernandez ejects Terry Francona for arguing a balk call: mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=14523967Joe West does not let Francona get into it with Hernandez. Francona's feelings are hurt...... bit.ly/lVxDd8West gets a lot of flak for his actions, but I admire him for protecting his fellow crewmates and for not allowing arguments to get prolonged and ridiculous.

If you watch this "Must C: Curious" video of the balk, it appears at the very end that Terry Francona throws his chewed gum at Angel Hernandez. Even the Twins broadcasters talk about that. mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=14540715
