From 1977. Kunkel is mic'd for the game plus we see Kunkel, Dave Phillips, and Doug Harvey doing an All-Star pre-game. Umpires for this game: HP - Kunkel 1B - Harvey 2B - Phillips 3B - Stello RF - Pulli LF - Brinkman Enjoy! bit.ly/m6h65F

I would love to know whose idea was it to put the AL umps in the 70s in those awful brown belts.
The AL members of that crew pretty much represent the best AL umps of the 70s - all that would be missing is Palermo..or perhaps Denkinger, who really was a good ump..despite what the people in St Louis think! (Evans is up there, as well as Haller)

Funny thing with Luciano is that he always did well in those player polls that SI and others did......possibly because he was honest when he blew one. And also possibly because when it got down to brass tacks he might have actually been pretty good.

Luciano was a pretty good umpire, a bit show boatish...but don't get him near Earl Weaver, it was like two banty roosters fighting it out on first sight.

The whole Weaver/Luciano thing came about partially because they happened to follow each other right up the chain - especially when both were in the International League. Frankly, it was not just Luciano - Brinkman and Haller also had extreme issues with Earl - just look at the infamous 'Wrong Earl' video...

Here's another segment on Bill Kunkel after he had his cancer operation. I didn't know that he had a 50-50 chance after the operation. I thought he had it beat and suddenly it came back. He's an inspiring man. Good segment.
PS--gotta love those cheesy local TV shows of the early 80s!
