On Sunday 1/9/2011 ESPN's "Outside the Lines" will run a story on Jim Joyce. Let me say this is just to alert people who may be interested in watching or recording the program. "Outside the Lines" comes on Sunday Mornings at 9 ET. There is also a story and a little 1:00 clip of what you can see on Sunday. Personally, I found the article interesting I had no idea NFL, NHL, and NBA officials reached out to him. sports.espn.go.com/espn/otl/news/story?id=5993137

This is one of the finest articles I've read with an official as the subject in quite some time. Well done ESPN!

An outstanding article, it shows that there is integrity still alive, and also people can be very compassionate and understanding. Officials all know they are under constant scrutinity and in the public eye. The good and honorable ones can stand up to adversity like Jim did and admit their mistakes. There are the detractors though, the classless contingent who will carry things over into threats and dispersions. There are some officials who let there over inflated egos speak, then there are people of integrity like Jim Joyce who sets the standard of decencey and integrity for all, both off and on the field. This whole thing should be a character lesson for all.

It's sad that Dud Selig left him hung out to dry after the game.

Great article. Joyce showed a great deal of class right after that incident. Officials in other sports can learn a lesson from this.

Great article. Joyce showed a great deal of class right after that incident. Officials in other sports can learn a lesson from this. I'd go so far as to say that if a similar situation happens in the future, the official in question almost certainly has to show the same attitude. If not, people will most definitely compare.

It's sad that Dud Selig left him hung out to dry after the game. How did Selig hang him out to dry? Had he stepped in and reversed the call, it would have opened Pandora's Box. It was a simple human error, and it ultimately didn't have an impact on the outcome of the baseball game (Detroit won 3-0). Now, if you want to say that Selig should have made more efforts to implement instant replay following the incident, that is a fair point. But to say that Selig hung him out to dry isn't being very fair to either one of them.

I wished Richie Garcia would have done what Jim Joyce did after his blown call back in 1996 and taken responsibility for his wrong call. I have all the respect in the world for Mr. Joyce. This was a great article and loooking forward to watching OTL ON Sunday morning.

I've read somewhere that Joyce declined a playoff assignment. If I ran MLB (which I don't), I would've reached out to Joyce and had him on the field for the WS. I have a game plan and I've seen a lot of ML games in person the past 5 years. No umpire hustles more when working the plate than Joyce. To me, he's the best senior umpire in baseball and it's a shame he hasn't already been assigned as a CC.

I agree, hard working umpire. Interesting to see who gets Jerry Crawford spot....my initial feeling is Mike Winters or Ed Rapuano.
