The season is almost halfway done and so far in the games I have seen I have noticed a clear top and a clear bottom with regard to this year's officiating crews:
Top (in alphabetical order)
Walt Anderson
Clete Blakeman
Scott Green
Terry McAulay
Pete Morelli
Bottom (in alphabetical order)
Jerome Boger
Carl Cheffers
Jeff Triplette
Ron Winter
This is not to say that this cannot change as there is a lot of football still to play, but I thought it will provoke some good discussion.
Based on what I have seen, I would not be surprised if both Ed Hochuli and Mike Carey (I chose those two since they are the most popular on this board) were either 1) Replacements for Referees in CC games; 2) Working the Pro Bowl; 3) Alternates; or 4) Out of the playoffs entirely. While they are strong officials, I do not think their performances thus far are up to their usual high standards. There are a number of crews in the middle including Tony Corrente, John Parry, and Walt Coleman who could very well be the last 3 playoff crews (after my top 5).
Of those Referees eligible to work the Super Bowl, I would probably have to give it to Pete Morelli (even if he did not eject the Viking player). I believe it was FredFan7 who said that the best official at each position should work the Super Bowl and, in my opinion, this year at Referee that has been Clete Blakeman, but he is ineligible.
The biggest disappointment for me has been the performance of Carl Cheffers and his crew. On paper they seem better than they have been on the field. Wash was in the Super Bowl two years ago, Payne worked it last year, Symonette worked a CC last year and was also a Super Bowl alternate. Hayes has worked multiple Super Bowls, but lately his playoff appearances have been hit or miss. Buchanan has been injured so not much to go on. Prukop is young, but he has not distinguished himself as much as some of the other officials who broke into the league around the same time.
