While there were no retirements/terminations last year (two swing officials hired), this season could begin a flood of retirements over the next three years. It should be noted that the CBA with the officials expires after this season (crosses fingers for smooth negotiations) and that may impact an officials decision to retire.
The following list IS NOT an official list. It is PURELY SPECULATIVE based on an officials service time. Any official who has 20 or more years experience is probably 60+ and can see the end of their career from where they are. I am sure that some of these officials will be back for another year.
Here are the officials who have 20 or more years service time:
Referees: Carey (22) Coleman (23) Green (21) Hochuli (22)
Umpires: Brown (20)
Head Linesmen: Veteri (20) Baltz (23) Hayword (21)
Line Judges: Tom Barnes (26) Ron Phares (27)
Field Judges: Steenson (21)
Side Judges: Carlson (23) Wyant (21)
Back Judges: None
It should also be noted that officials with less than 20 years experience could retire as well. I know for a fact that Don Carey, BJ126, is pushing 65 and has under 20 years experience.
This list does not take into account injury, illness, or performance departures.
If any officials are going to retire at the end of this season, they are starting the final month of their final regular season. I wish them a successful final month.
Insiders, please post any information about any retirement announcements you know of in this thread.
Thank you.

I strongly doubt that there will be more than three referees retire this season. It has never happened that I can remember and I think the NFL values experience at the white hat, too many rookie Rs in one season may make the NFL nervous.
Of the referees on that list, I think only Coleman (service time) and Green (injuries) might retire. Winter (age) and Corrente (health/new job with Pac-12) could be candidates with less than 20 years that might retire.
That said, I just hope that all retirees this year will be able to go out on their OWN terms with happy memories.

I would think that while Coleman is the most tenured WH, if both Green and Corrente retire due to health, the NFL may request of him to stay around another year as to not have 3 rookies in one year. I'm sure he'd oblige. Typically in years past, the new WHs have come from the retiring referees crew. Do any of the Corrente's or Green's guy stick out as possibles?
I would think if Hochuli retires, his replacement would be Adrian Hill, who is superb, but other than that, I'm not too familiar with any of the possiblities on the Coleman, Green, Winter or Corrente crews. Of course, the NFL always rotates around, so that doesn't necesarily mean anytihng

I think Rose or Helverson is the back-up R on Green's crew
John Hussey (Pete Morelli's crew), Craig Wrolstad (Ed Hochuli's crew), and Greg Meyer (Clete Blakeman's crew) I believe have experience in NFLE as a Referee. Terry Brown (Terry McAulay's crew) was a college Referee. The other option is using someone like Kirk Dornan and/or Don Carey on a temporary basis while they groom someone from the college ranks (Novak, Austin)

On that point.... I feel R-85 Ed Hochuli will not retire anytime soon. Hochuli said on an interview with Losties(Jay and Jack) this past March 2011... that he felt last yr was the BEST YR he ever had!....... I give him 7 more years

Even though Hochuli is 60ish and Mike Carey is 63-64ish, I think both are in good shape to continue for a few more seasons.
I don't WANT these guys to retire, but the calendar pages are changing and the ibuprofen doesn't help like it used to.........

It has never happened that I can remember and I think the NFL values experience at the white hat, too many rookie Rs in one season may make the NFL nervous. Well, after the 1990 season Jim Tunney and Jerry Seeman retired, plus Gene Barth died, so there were three new referees in 1991 (Stan Kemp, Bernie Kukar and Larry Nemmers). Also, after 1989 Ben Dreith and Fred Wyant were moved to LJ and Dick Jorgensen died.

I won't be surprised if Scott Green hangs up his WH & Whistle. I think Walt Coleman isn't that far behind. Frankly I feel the same about Tonoy Correntte. If this occurs Shaun Hochuli shouldn't be far away from joining the NFL. Also Grry Austin's son will be wH soon

Bump.
Hopefully those who have some information will be able to post it sometime soon.
On the flip side, the potential retirees may be waiting for the new CBA to get done before they make any announcements. Any and all information is welcome.

In a tip of the cap to the officials being designated "part time," January 1 to May 1 (or May 15, I forget) marks a "dark period" where the league does not communicate with the officials except for playoff assignments.
Does this mean the officials have already informed the league of their intent to retire?
What does this mean for officials who (unfortunately) have to be terminated due to performance? They still have a game after January 1 to try and save their jobs and the league would never tell an official they are terminated before their season is over.

I would think that those who are on the bubble due to performance know it themselves.

I was reading an article last night about the 8 officials who were fired in 2003 (1 was rehired) and it said there were a lot of officials canned after the 2001 season (some other retired). Does anyone know which ones were released after that '01 season (I think Frantz and Gierke retired on their own but I dont think Keven Mack did).

the following left after the 2001 season: 110 Botchan,50 Gereb,111 Frantz,104 Hamer, 72 Gierke,22 Baetz,80 Millis,102 Mack,76 Leisbach,73 Skelton - Botchan was probably the best NFL umpire,Millis became a supervisor, Baetz,Gierke and Frantz I believe retired - Mack and Leisbach were released (pretty sure) - Hamer and Skelton
