It does seem awfully strange that the same guys work the later rounds of the playoffs every year and retiring officials sometimes know very early on that they will not be getting a playoff assignment (see Kerry Fraser). While the same could be said in the NFL (see guys like Terry McAulay and Ron Botchan) it usually amounts to 1 or 2 out of 21 (Conference Championship and Super Bowl) not 6-8 out of 8 in the Stanley Cup Finals or an even greater ratio in the Conference Championships

The NHL has made it a practice the last few years of not assigning retiring officials to The Playoffs. Their last game is generally at an arena of the choice and the can pick their partners.
