I remember watching this game live in 2007. There were a total of 3 unsportsmanlike conduct penalties on the play. Garth Defelice throws the first flag and Jeff Bergman handles the ejection. Sapp was absolutely out of control here.

Great find. This is the first time I've ever seen a pro game where there was an ejection for excessive arguing. It's always been fighting or contact with an official. Sapp must have really gotten personal and nasty. You don't mess with Jeff Bergman.
Did you notice before the ejection, that DeFelice flew over and got #21 out of Boger's way (and open mic!) while he made an announcement.
Never been a fan of Kiffin and it's obvious he had no control over his team. Sapp was totally out of line, wouldn't let it go, and totally deserved an early shower.

Russ,
I enjoyed this video - thanks! Although, this is one reason why it is difficult for me to listen to commentators, especially when they pretend to know what is being done/shared/said on the field.
FredFan7, do you know what Sapp said to get disqualified? Or why he was totally out of line?

Too bad that an interception was the end result here. That's a sequence of events where OAK needed to have 7 points shoved down their throats too.

Maybe it was a cumulative number of unsporting acts against officials with no compliance to calm down. Maybe it was a threat against officials. Maybe it was an accusation of betting on the game. All speculation. One thing for sure, Jeff Bergman was really whizzed off.

after the initial flag for 15 from DeFelice, Boger said both USC penalties would be enforced (on 56 and 99), then there was the USC on Sapp again getting him ejected, were all 4 enforced for +60yds on that drive?

There was probably some half-the-distance enforcements, but yes, all four were walked off.

Looked that up in the gamebook. Oddly, there was a Jacksonville penalty on the play previous, which was marked off, then the four dead-balls for a total of 33 yards. The sequence of events: 3-10-OAK 25 (:25) (Shotgun)
9-D.Garrard pass incomplete short middle to 89-M.Lewis (90-T.Sands). PENALTY on JAX-79-T.Pashos, Illegal Use of Hands, 10 yards, enforced at OAK 25 - No Play. PENALTY on OAK-99-W.Sapp, Unsportsmanlike Conduct, 15 yards, enforced between downs. PENALTY on OAK-56-D.Burgess, Unsportsmanlike Conduct, 10 yards, enforced between downs. 1-10-OAK 20 (:21)
PENALTY on OAK-99-W.Sapp, Unsportsmanlike Conduct, 5 yards, enforced between downs. PENALTY on OAK-99-W.Sapp, Disqualification, 3 yards, enforced between downs. It is rare to see two dead-ball penalties marked off on the same down in the NFL, but four! Add the JAX penalty, and that is 5 penalties, none offsetting. It's like a CFL enforcement there, which requires the use of a slide rule on occasion. (A to you, Juggling.)

We have 5 fouls that are always enforced:
UR - same as personal foul = 15 yards OC - same as UNS - 10 yards and after all other fouls except NM OC with DQ - ZERO yards RP - same as PF but 25y + DQ NM or IE - same as OC but 5 yards and after all other fouls
UR and RP are unrestricted.
So up here it'd be:
25 -> 35 35 -> 25 25 -> 15 15 -> 7.5 7.5 -> 7.5 with DQ

Are the rule sets the same for all levels of football in Canada (CFL on down)?

The crew did a great job of handling this, IMO. Sapp was out of control, so they had to do something to get him off the field and keep the game from turning into a circus.

Are the rule sets the same for all levels of football in Canada (CFL on down)? Unnecessary Roughness (contact tomfoolery) Objectionable Conduct (non-contact tomfoolery) Rough Play (UR with a severe nature) No Mouthguard / Illegal Equipment My ruling was for amateur. The CFL does have UR, OC, RP. They probably have NM and IE, but I bet it never gets called. Ever seen "no mouthguard" in the NFL? lol I'm quite certain that the CFL enforcement would be the same with the exception that UR and RP are restricted to half the distance. In that case: 25 -> 40 (hands to the face is a UR up here) 40 -> 30 30 -> 20 20 -> 10 10 -> 10 with DQ We have two books: CFL and amateur. My college games play the same rules as the 6-year olds. Yes, it can work! Having said that, the CIS (our NCAA) has a few minor exceptions: allow BBW except on COPs and kicking plays), and stops the clock on first downs. OT is also slightly different.

Not much has changed through the years, Sapp never knew when and he still doesn't know when to shut his mouth, did everyone notice who # 91 HL was? Jeff Bergmans brother Jerry.

Sapp loves to talk, but he was also a great player for most of his career. Not going to get defensive over a one-time incident.
