Here is the 1975 NBA All-Star game that featured Mendy Rudolph as one of the officials. This would end of being Rudolph's final year in the league before leaving the court to do broadcasting work for CBS in 1976.

He worked into the playoffs in 1975, but almost died on the court due to a pulmonary embolism. A blood clot broke free in his leg and went to his lung. You are right. He retired after 1975, did broadcasting work, and died of a heart attack in 1979 at age 53.

You see Loeber toss up the opening tap. Normally the lead official has the "honor" of doing the opening toss. Sometime in the 1960s, Rudolph was knocked cold after an opening jump ball. After that, he ALWAYS delegated jump balls to his partner.

Ed T. Rush #4 always delegated the toss as he had sufferred several broken noses tossing.
In the late 80's early 90's the toss was delegated to The Umpire Position. I believe Joey Crawford started the pattern of The Lead tossing the jump balls as time went on.
