Gordon Wells (umpire from 1972-1993, No. 89) was one of the best umpires of the 80's, he worked two Super Bowls (after the 1983 and 1988 seasons) and at least 5 Conference Championship games. He started his NFL career in the crew of Tommy Bell and later Jerry Markbreit. Then he worked with Chuck Heberling and Dick Hantak. He finished his career in the crew of Bernie Kukar. I don't remember if this article from 1989 has been posted before, hope you like it as much as I did: articles.latimes.com/1989-09-12/sports/sp-2181_1_gordon-wells

Nice find. Wells was a tough old bird. I saw him take more severe tumbles in his career than just about any other umpire.
He was a great official.
Does anyone know if he is still with us?
