From Pereira's 12/27/11 Chat:
Comment From JD Is it true the NFL is looking to go to 8 officials from the current seven?
1:46 It is true but in my mind not necessary. Don't look for it to happen next season even though they have experimented with it in the last two pre-seasons.

The umpire's new mechanics in the backfield have worked out a million times better than I thought it would. The second back judge would clog the secondary and is not necessary. The only reason to have a second secondary official is to for one official to have one specific key when there is an empty backfield and five wide receivers (HL, FJ, SJ, BJ, DJ). LJ would have only forward progress responsibility relating to the QB.

I've been away and am back for just a few days. My question: is there truly any benefit for the umpire's return to the "old" position in the last minutes of a half, or when the ball is spotted inside the offense's 5 yard line?

My question: is there truly any benefit for the umpire's return to the "old" position in the last minutes of a half, or when the ball is spotted inside the offense's 5 yard line? Ostensibly, it is to be able to spot the ball faster during the hurry up offense and to provide goal-line help on inside the 5 yard line. If you think about it logically, if it is to important in those two scenarios to have the U positioned behind the defense, you could argue that it is important to have the U there ALL the time.
